Three Great Reasons NOT To Ignore Possibilities

We all have enough on the daily to-do lists without adding more. This is why we're tempted to let possibilities in our lives go; it's too much trouble or maybe it seems like there is too little to be gained. Here are three big reasons why you should take chances whenever they come up.

"Sometimes you never realize the value of a moment until it becomes a memory" - Dr. Seuss.

We can sit back and think of those times when we should have said 'Yes', that glimpse or the fleeting moment of opportunity passing us by, or we can choose to take action.

  • Do it for yourself or do it for others: When you seize new moments, you create new paths for yourself and others. You have the power to open doors not only for yourself but for those around you. Bernardo Carducci, professor of psychology and director of the Shyness Research Institute at Indiana University Southwest, asks us to imagine an empty dance floor. If you are the first out there you encourage others to join in.

  • You will be happier: Your friends are going out of town for the weekend and invite you to tag along. At first, you want to say yes, but then that endless mental list stops you. There's laundry to do, you have not finished your work, there is a project coming due and you feel going out of town will take your mind off of it. Life doesn't wait. The fun times will pass you by if you don't start to say yes to them. Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt, encourages us to find a way to say yes to new things.

  • Develop new brain powers: Our brains are shaped by our experiences. New experiences lead to new habits. Let conquering new possibilities become your next habit. Like a water drainage system, if the water is flowing in the wrong direction you simply build a system to move the water in the right direction. Our brains work in much the same way, creating new paths for the change you want to see makes it easier to flow that way more often. The human brain is still more capable than our most complex and advanced computers.

"Say yes and you'll figure it out afterwards" - Tina Fey
